15th April, 2013.
A Thuisti,
We are currently trying to improve the standard of literacy in our school. We introduced the Literacy Lift Off programme at the start of this school year, and this has been very successful. As part of our self-evaluation of reading, the children completed a Pupil Questionnaire. A number of children commented that
they would like a greater variety of books in the library and to visit the library more often. Up to now the library was also being used two days a week by our shared Learning Support Teacher Mr. Kelly. With desks and chairs in the library there was very little space when children visited the library. Because of this we decided to revamp the library. We want to thank Mrs. Vaughan for co-ordinating this project. It was a huge job. Hundreds of old and tattered books were recycled. Books were donated by parents and children and to date there are 2,425 books in our new library. John Farnan, our caretaker, painted the walls. Computers were removed from the room and large bean bags for sitting on were put in their place. We want to thank fifth and sixth class for putting in a huge effort sorting and classifying books as well as designing and painting a variety of cartoon characters on timber for the walls.
This Friday morning (April 19th) between 9.00 and 9.30a.m. we are officially opening the library. We would like to invite parents for tea/coffee to celebrate the opening with us. Nicola Cowley will bake a cake to celebrate the occasion along with small cup cakes for each child. The local author, Liz Gough, will have reading workshops with the children and she will do the honours of cutting the ribbon for the official opening. To commemorate this special occasion the children can order a personalised bookmark with their name on it for €1.50. This is optional. If you would like your child to order a bookmark please sign the slip below and it must be returned tomorrow as orders are being sent to the printer tomorrow.
Any parents that can’t join us for tea/coffee on Friday morning are welcome to join us when they are collecting their children at home time on Friday.
All children will go home at 1.40p.m. tomorrow Tuesday 16th due to a Staff Meeting. There is a school bus but it will possibly be ten minutes late.
Reminder if you haven’t already sent in €10.00 for tennis coaching please send in money in an envelope.
Mrs Long will be absent for the remainder of this week and Ms. Geraghty will be substituting in her absence.
Is mise,
Seamus Tansley.
