Literacy
‘Lift Off to Literacy’ is an intensive whole class Intervention of Reading and Writing. It provides children with opportunities to read books at their own level of instruction and supports them in becoming independent writers. Pupils work at stations to carry out a particular aspect of this Literacy Programme.
The programme mirrors the principles of the Reading Recovery Programme. It is co-ordinated by a trained Reading Recovery Teacher. Class teachers, learning support teachers and sometimes a parent take responsibility for one of the four stations. Each group spend ten minutes at their station (1) Familiar Reading, (2) New Book, (3) Letter Work and (4) Writing. They move onto a new station at the end of this period.
At Rathfeigh N.S. ‘Literacy Lift Off ’is implemented with Senior Infants, First and Second classes. The programme lasts for six weeks. All pupils are assessed before the intervention to establish their Instructional Level of Reading. They are grouped according to their reading ability. The programme uses specially graded ‘PM+’ readers. At the end of the programme pupils are re-assessed to establish their new levels of literacy.
Our school is grateful to the Parents’ Association who funded the purchase of these books and also their hard work in covering the extensive set of readers.
